Pets are family too!

If you’re like me, my pets are considered a huge part of my family. I consider them my “kids”.  From my beloved Samoyeds, our two cat rescues,  and my Ragdoll cat, each pet has played a special part in my life.  Even down to my catfish named “Fred” (and he’s over 1 ft. long in length).   I first found out about my love and attraction for animals when I was a wee girl (around 5 years old) when a stray skunk, I officially named “Kitty” began wandering in our back yard each morning.  I can still hear my Mum screaming, pleading for me to come back to the house. Of course my Daddy was the one who remained calm, and finally coaxed me away from my new found attraction.  In attempt to deter me from my new “pet”, my parents soon presented me with my two new best friends! A stuffed rabbit  and a real live, tiny cream colored kitten, named Pinky (who lived to the ripe old age of around 15 years old).  Bless his heart, I’ll always remember my Daddy, still getting a big kick out of this experience as I got older.

To this day, I still love skunks and all animals.  Eventually I’ll have to share my experience with an Alpaca named “Mascot”, when the rascal decided he wanted to sit in the front seat of our van.  I love spinning and blending exotic fibers together such as Alpaca with my Samoyeds’ undercoat, and have blended English Angora with sheep fiber to make lovely yarns.  I enjoy going to the Sheep and Wool Festivals and finding unique books on different sheep breeds. My husband is definitely relieved to know I won’t be able to bring any “live lambs” back on the plane with me when I visit my family in Northern Ireland.

Here are just a few pics I decided to share of three of my beloved pets that I’ve been fortunate enough to be owned and loved by.  My last Samoyed, Panda (shown below), passed away two years ago now, and we decided to adopt another dog from a rescue shelter.  His  name is “Patches”, and his mother was an Australian Shepherd, but his father (unknown at the time), had to be a “hunting dog”.

The cat in my newest book called Mortal Magick, (soon to be released)  was named after and created from the delightful antics of my own Ragdoll cat, Samson.  As you can see, he’s a huge help when I head for my laptop.         Samson, Panda and Patches are pictured below.

If you have a special pet that has made a big influence in your life, please feel free to drop a wee post!

  • Hey, that’s too weird. We have a huge goldfish named Fred. My daughter won him in a ping pong toss at a fair, and he’s now 8 years old and looks more like a Carp.

I’ve also got a fat, fat cat named Frito. She’s an orange Tabby, that has learned to turn on my clock radio by stepping on the top until she gets the radio to come on…it’s usually around three or four in the morning. She won’t stop until I get up and feed her…why she’s so big, I suppose.

About a year ago, we lost my son’s corn snake who was named Nacho to cancer. And our beloved Chihuahua named Cookie.

I’ve been thinking about getting another doggie, but not sure just yet. Cookie is buried in the back yard, and we planted a weeping willow over her…thought it was appropriate as she is sorely missed, but she’s living on in our new tree.

So glad you posted about your pets, Sophia! Sorry to hear about Cookie and your son’s snake. I know how hard it is to lose a pet. I know Samson likes to wake me up early every morning too, he’s not satisfied until he gets that first nibble of can cat food! Thanks for stopping by, and keep us posted if you decide to get another puppy!

Your samoyed looks just like my American Eskimo. We lost her two years ago and I still miss her. I have had dogs all my life and can’t imagine what it would be like without them.

Thanks for dropping by and posting Kelley. Yes, American Eskimos look very similar, except smaller, I believe. I miss all my beloved Samoyeds, and would love to have another one. But I’m glad we decided to adopt a dog from a rescue, Patches has been a wonderful companion to my husband and is spoiled rotten of course. Please stop back again soon!

Nice post!! Funny how cats have that instinct to get on top of your work (literally…) and then, once comfortably settled on the desk-covered-with-sheets-of-paper-and-reference-books-and-notes, to look at you with that “What…?”, innocent look! My Bruce is the same 🙂

Thanks for posting Kelly! I know, my cats always seem to settle down right on top of the paper “I need the most” – and of course they naturally sense I need their help when they spot my pen coming out to write something 🙂

Thank you Kathy 🙂 And thanks for being a great friend and for all your encouragement thru the past ten years! I can’t wait to hand you, “as promised”, an autographed copy of Mortal Magick!
